This adventure is designed as a side quest that can be inserted into an ongoing adventure or campaign. It involves a series of three linking scenes (and an optional fourth research scene between the others) that can be placed in between the action of whatever other event the party is undertaking. Ideally the scenes of this side adventure should be spread out and inserted into the game over several sessions of play.
Every autumn the sleepy village of Faen celebrates the Soultide Festival. The souls of the departed are guided out of the forest and can depart for their appointed afterlife. The Party are guests for this year's celebrations and are chosen to be the judges in an annual costume contest. They must wander the village, meeting the locals in order to determine their favorite costume. Along the way, they learn about the village's traditions and local lore. However, the village harbors a dark secret. A timeless evil sleeps below the village. The adventurers must descend into the depths to confront a shadowy threat that has been harassing the village for many years. South of Tarlac Keep and across Lake Lowe lies a dormant volcano and its set of caverns. This location is currently the home to the powerful Artillus Highwing a massive Black Dragon. Artillus and his mate were responsible for the destruction of Tarlac at the cost of his partner. Artillus lost most of his army that day and has since moved into the caverns and attempted to rebuild the army to set his revenge upon the area.
